Photojournalism, glamour and the paparazzi
“Another area in which we can observe the operations of Spectacle is that of photo journalism. Although a documentary form of photography which has been used to highlight atrocities and deliver information and news, the photo-journalist is keenly aware of the need for spectacular images that will draw attention on the news stand and encourage sales above those of rival newspapers.”
This quote from the ‘Spectacles And Illusions, photography and commodity culture.’ text interested me because it shined a light on a economical perspective of the benefits of having an interesting topic in a photograph. The quality of production needs to be there, i.e the photographic skills and equipment but it needs to be equalled by an interesting photographic topic. The topic in the image is just as important as the quality of photograph, especially in photojournalism which I believe is the non- artistic sister of street portraiture in a way. You are photographing REAL LIFE but it’s important to present it as honestly as possible.
I need to ensure that I consider the vitality of keeping the images interesting throughout my work and consider the steps it takes to do so throughout photographing.
